About the Resource

Welcome to The German Graphic Novel, a site for German language educators who would like to incorporate authentic graphic novels into their courses.

This project was made possible by a Kutztown University Research Committee Grant and a Kutztown University Assessment Grant.  The majority of the books that I discuss on this site are available from Kutztown University’s Rohrbach Library.

By clicking on the tabs above you can see detailed information on contemporary German graphic novels that fit into those categories, each of which contains detailed records of current graphic novels.  Entries are in the following  format:

  • Author Last Name, Author First Name.  Title of Book. Publisher, Year of Publication, and ISBN-13.
  • Sample Text: A sample dialogue or text from the first page. This information could be useful for instructors to see if the text would be suitable for their students, for example if it uses specialized language or a conversational tone.
  • Summary of Text (including recommendations for language learning levels), and Description of Graphic Artwork.
  • The cover  and a sample page.Faustfaust sample
  • E for everyoneA rating (following the Video Game Ratings) so that teachers and instructors can choose school and group appropriate texts.

    Hi Lynn,
Nicely done! I really like the new site. Very well conceived and structured. I’ve already found several new works which I wasn’t yet familiar with. Is there any way to make suggestions? -Josh Kavaloski, Drew University

  2. I am really enjoying the information you’ve been imparting on your website regarding comics and graphic novels. Do you ever run into deadline problems? A handful of my blog visitors have complained about my website not having enough consistency in producing material. Do you have any recommendations to help fix this issue? Perhaps you can post your ideas in one of your articles. .

    • Thanks, Alfred. It’s enjoyable and I think I’m offering valuable information. I don’t think of my site as a blog, but rather a web resource. I update it when I can but I don’t think I have to send something out daily or even weekly. Thanks again for your positive feedback.

  3. A fascinating discussion is worth comment. I do think that you ought to publish more about this subject, it might
not be a taboo subject but typically people do not discuss such subjects.
    To the next! Many thanks!!

    Hi, Lynn.
Fascinating project and a wonderful website. Found it linked at the German Society for Comics Research (http://www.comicgesellschaft.de/).
What baffles me is the fact that YOU (an American) talk about German graphic novels, whereas I (a German) write about American horror comics (http://fifties-horror.de/). World of wonders!
